Two business associations of former national security adviser Michael Flynn have been charged in connection with an alleged plot of torture a Turkish cleric inside the United States in order to get him handed over.

Bijan Kian, an American Flynn business partner and Kamil Ekim Alptekin, a Turkish man, was charged this month by a large jury in the Eastern District of Virginia, according to court documents rejected on Monday.

The men worked for the company Flynn was formed after leaving the state service. Prosecutors accuse that they did not properly reveal their work as foreign agents and actually designed a system to try to conceal the ultimate origin of their payments in Turkey.

The Ministry of Justice has opposed the disclosure of the most prestigious Fethullah Gulen, because officials do not see evidence that he had targeted a coup in Turkey.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blames Gulen for the coup attempt two years ago. Gulen denies that he did not matter.

According to some reports, the question of whether to surrender the Gulen may be a living issue within the Trump administration.

The Turkish government has tried to help with the case. The new court action says Turkish officials approved the budget for the lobby campaign and received regular updates. The goal was to build public pressure against the Gulen in the United States to create an incentive for the government to send him back to Turkey.

However, Flynns Business Association did not register with the Advocate General as required by court documents.

Flynn has collaborated with prosecutors after claiming unjustified charges and is required to convene this week.
